A Pandora’s Box
Alcohol is a socially sensitive product, and access to it is restricted in this country to adults 21 years of age or older. But tech-savvy teenagers have found a way to get alcohol without a face-to-face ID check. A recent survey of minors aged 14-20 reveals that more than half a million kids admit buying beer, wine or liquor over the Internet – where it is impossible for an alcohol seller to check an ID for proof of age. Another 3.1 million minors report having a friend who has ordered alcohol online.
In spite of this alarming trend, the wine industry is pressuring states to change their alcohol laws, and the changes could open a Pandora’s Box granting kids easier access to all forms of alcohol – wine, liquor and beer – unless you take action to do something. Do you want alcohol sold in your community on an honor system, with no local public safeguards or government oversight?
